Pregnancy Massage
(Pre-natal & Post-natal)

What is Pregnancy Massage?

Pregnancy Massage is a term used during or after pregnancy (also called Pre-natal and Post-natal Massage). It is a complementary therapy that is specifically designed for the needs of the individual’s changing body. The treatment lasts approximately one hour.

The Benefits of Pregnancy Massage?

Carrying a baby inside during pregnancy changes the centre of gravity, which may add additional stress on the back, neck, abdominal muscles and shoulders. In addition, ligaments become relaxed during pregnancy making the pelvic joints less stable which leads to postural changes. Research into the therapeutic benefits of massage for pregnant women is still very limited. However there is evidence that Pregnancy Massage therapy may have multiple positive effects, including:

Pregnancy Massage in Buxton
  • Lowers anxiety

  • Helps decrease swelling in the arms and legs

  • Helps to relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints

  • Promotes sleep

  • Reduces levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine

Pregnancy Massage Techniques

The therapist adjusts their techniques accordingly when performing a pregnancy massage to address the changes that occur.

During pregnancy due to the circulatory changes, blood volume may increase dramatically, as much as 50% and blood flow in the legs may often become sluggish. These circulatory changes may put a pregnant woman at risk to blood clots due to levels of anticoagulants in the blood intended to prevent haemorrhaging during delivery which naturally rise.

To be safe, the therapist avoids applying strong pressure and deep tissue massage techniques particularly in the lower legs, calves and inner thigh. The techniques are instead very light with slow movements towards the heart.

Pre-natal massage

Pre-natal massage is best performed either on your side or seated as most women find it uncomfortable to lie face-down.

Past mid-pregnancy

Past mid-pregnancy it is not advisable for the patient to lie on their back as the weight of the uterus may place excess pressure on the vein that returns blood from the legs to the heart.  For comfort, extra pillows and massage supports will be provided for support.

For those patients that find it uncomfortable to lie on their side or being seated, a pre-natal massage table can be provided on request.
